How to Buy Unlisted Shares in India: Step-by-Step Process

How to Buy Unlisted Shares in India: Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Choose the company

Start with research, not price. Compare growth, profit or loss, funding history, and IPO plans. Popular searches include NSE unlisted shares, Hero FinCorp unlisted shares, CSK shares, PPFAS unlisted shares, PhonePe, Razorpay, Zepto and boAt. Check that the company is still unlisted.

Step 2: Pick a trustworthy broker

Because there is no exchange, your broker matters. Ask about their track record, how they source shares, and whether the seller's shares are genuine and transferable. Avoid anyone who asks for cash or wants funds sent to a third-party account.

Step 3: Complete KYC

You will typically need your PAN card, a Client Master Report (CMR) copy from your demat provider, and a cancelled cheque if payment is coming from an account not shown in the CMR.

Step 4: Confirm price and quantity

Prices are negotiated and indicative. Ask for the current rate, the minimum lot, and whether the quote is for retail or bulk quantity. Get the confirmation in writing on WhatsApp or email.

Step 5: Pay through banking channels

Pay by RTGS, NEFT or IMPS from the same bank account linked to your demat. Never pay cash. Keep the transaction receipt.

Step 6: Shares credited to demat

After payment is confirmed, the shares are transferred to your demat account, commonly within about 24 hours when the deal is on time. Check your holding statement and keep the transfer record for tax purposes.

Safety checklist

Verify the ISIN of the shares, ensure the transfer goes to your own demat, avoid guaranteed-return promises, and read the company's latest annual report.
